Pre-K Classroom

  • The Pre-K Classroom encourages children to engage in hands-on activities in order to build academic skills and develop a sense of accomplishment and responsibility. We focus on kindergarten readiness activities including:

    • Attention Span
    • Literacy skills
    • Early Writing skills
    • Early Math skills
    • Listening skills
    • Problem-solving skills
    • Communication skills
    • Creativity
    • Social Skills
    • Fine Motor Skills

When children enter Pre-K, we like to take the time to learn about each child and devise our instruction based on his/her individual needs. Some of the skills that make for a successful transition into Pre-K are:

    • Being confident and ready to separate from parents.
    • Follow 2-step directions.
    • Some independent life skills such as toileting, putting on/taking off own clothes and cleaning up after themselves.
    • Able to take turns, share and handle waiting for short periods of time.
    • Retelling a simple story, rhyme or song.
    • Using words to express him/herself and during conflict.
    • Engage in activity and/or story for 5-10 minutes.
    • Know basic colors and shapes.
    • Able to count and sort items.
    • Recognize some letters and numbers.

    • Mary Shaw

I am the lead teacher in the Pre-K room. Although I grew up in Pittsburgh, I moved around for 20 years prior to returning. I am from a large family and am married with a grown son. I love to travel and spend time with my family and friends. I have my degree in Early Childhood Development. I have been teaching preschool for over 20 years and have worked here at Providence for over 10 years. I believe that children can learn in so many ways and the importance of learning while having fun. I am happy to be part of the wonderful team of teachers and staff here at Providence.
