Pre-K Classroom

  • The Pre-K Classroom encourages children to engage in hands-on activities to build academic skills and develop a sense of accomplishment and responsibility. We focus on kindergarten readiness activities including:
    • Attention Span
    • Early Writing and Literacy Skills
    • Early Math Skills
    • Problem-solving Skills
    • Communication and Listening Skills
    • Creativity
    • Social Skills
    • Fine Motor Skills
When children enter Pre-K, we like to take the time to learn about each child and devise our instruction based on his/her individual needs. Some of the skills that make for a successful transition into Pre-K are:
    • Being confident and ready to separate from parents.
    • Follow 2-step directions.
    • Some independent life skills such as toileting, putting on/taking off own clothes and cleaning up after themselves.
    • Able to take turns, share and handle waiting for short periods of time.
    • Retelling a simple story, rhyme or song.
    • Using words to express him/herself and during conflict.
    • Engage in activity and/or story for 5-10 minutes.
    • Know basic colors and shapes.
    • Able to count and sort items.
    • Recognize some letters and numbers

  • As the Lead Teacher in the Pre-K room, Mary Shaw brings a wealth of life experience and formal education to her students. With a deep commitment to early childhood development, she shares, “I have my degree in Early Childhood Development. I have been teaching preschool for over 20 years and have worked here at Providence for over 10 years.”

Mary emphasizes engaging, play-based education to prepare her students for the next big step in their academic journey. “I believe that children can learn in so many ways and the importance of learning while having fun,” she explains, adding, “I am happy to be part of the wonderful team of teachers and staff here at Providence.”

  • Outside of the classroom, Mary has a rich personal background that informs her welcoming approach. “Although I grew up in Pittsburgh, I moved around for 20 years prior to returning,” she notes. “I am from a large family and am married with a grown son. I love to travel and spend time with my family and friends.”
