Skills for a Successful Transition
When children enter Pre-K, we take the time to learn about each child and adapt our instruction based on their individual needs. Some of the foundational skills we work on to make for a successful transition include:
- Being confident and ready to separate from parents.
- Following 2-step directions.
- Practicing independent life skills (such as toileting, putting on/taking off clothes, and cleaning up).
- Taking turns, sharing, and handling waiting for short periods.
- Retelling a simple story, rhyme, or song.
- Using words to express themselves and navigate conflicts.
- Engaging in an activity or story for 5-10 minutes.
- Knowing basic colors and shapes, as well as counting and sorting items.
- Recognizing some letters and numbers.
